VolbeatHalestormPhotos and write up Kylee Thompson Photography This will be a night I won’t forget. I still can’t believe the amount of legends and talented musicians I had in front of my camera. Last night I had the pleasure of photographing Dream Theater, Devin Townsend and Animals as leaders as part of Dreamsonic 2023 in Calgary, Alberta. I don’t take a lot of trips outside of Edmonton for concerts but this was well worth the almost 7 hour drive (round trip). They are playing in Edmonton on this tour but I have a prior commitment that evening. This being one of the only non seated shows on this tour the bands enjoyed the fans being able to get up close to enjoy the music. I’ve had the chance to see both Animals As Leaders and Devin Townsend live in concert but this was the first for Dream Theater. 13 years I’ve been waiting to see them and glad it finally happened and I could enjoy moving around versus having to sit. As the evening was underway Dream Theater announced on their social media the sudden passing of Dave Cohen. Dave was the guitar tech for Animals As Leaders and an integral part of the Dreamsonic tour. Rest in peace Dave. First up we had Animals As Leaders. I have to say sometimes its a nice change to have just instruments with no vocals, then you can truly appreciate the notes you are hearing. These guys are so talented, I will never get tired of seeing these guys live. Next we had Devin Townsend. He is a man of many talents including an excellent Theremin player. Him and his bandmates put on a hell of a set and are fucking great at what they do. The last time I saw Devin play it was in a venue 1/3 this size and this venue was much more fitting for him. More fans could see him play. Finally came Dream Theater! They are one band I never thought I would get a chance to see live, or photograph for that matter. 13 years was worth the wait and just gave me more time to listen. Last night we got a chance to hear music from I believe it was 5 or 6 albums. Including the tracks Solitary Shell, Caught In a Web, The Count of Tuscany, and of course Pull me under. If you have the chance to attend one of the last few dates on this tour I would definitely recommend it. With these three acts you will no be disappointed!
