The Tour of the Setting Sum made a fiery stop in Calgary on a windy Thursday night.
Ontario’s own Sum 41 - comprised of vocalist Deryk Whibley, lead guitarist Dave “Brownsound” Baksh, bassist Jason “Cone” McCaslin, rhythm guitarist Tom Thacker, and drummer Frank Zummo - attracted a passionate crowd at the Scotiabank Saddledome to celebrate their music career, spanning almost 3 decades.
Kicking off the night were fellow Canadian punk-rock bands, Gob and Pup.
Gob, co-founded by Sum 41 guitarist Tom Thacker, kicked off the evening with the high-energy track “Give Up The Grudge” off their 2003 album “Foot In Mouth Disease.” They played other notable songs such as “Oh! Ellin,” “I Hear You Calling,” and a rocking cover of “Paint It Black.”
Pup took the stage next, with vocalist Stefan Babcock noting that they usually played to crowds of 500 people, as opposed to the thousands packed into the arena that night. They performed rowdy hits such as “Kids,” “Dark Days,” and “DVP,” with Babcock jumping around, playing guitar behind his head, and stage diving into the crowd. Arguably, the most punk part of Pup’s performance was when they ended their set and guitarist Steve Sladkowski held up a transgender flag as he walked off, a welcome sign of solidarity.
Anticipation built as the crowd waited for Sum 41 to take the stage. Their grand entrance into “Motivation” included flames shooting up from the stage as they burst into a fiery performance. “The Hell Song” saw confetti shooting into the crowd, and vocalist Deryck Whibley pranced around stage, popping red balloons during “Underclass Hero.”
Whibley asked if anyone was a fan of metal, to which the crowd cheered enthusiastically. Guitarist Dave “Brownsound” was all smiles when he shredded the guitar solo of “Master of Puppets” by Metallica with Whibley singing the infamous chorus.
Leading into “Walking Disaster,” Whibley took a moment to tell a story about his guitar. He got the instrument when he was 17, and it was used on early albums and music video shoots - until it was stolen in 2003, which triggered resounding boos from the audience. “I thought I would never see it again,” he noted sadly. That is, until he started looking for it, and recovered it only a few months ago. The crowd shared his joy, and began chanting, “Fuck that guy!” in response to the thief. Whibley then plugged his book, aptly titled Walking Disaster, which shares more about the stolen guitar incident.
All throughout the night, Whibley repeatedly referred to the crowd as “family,” frequently asking for the lights to be turned up brighter so he could see everyone in the room. He even stopped mid-song during “Noots” to ask if fans were alright in the mosh pit, and reminded everyone to look after each other.
Performing over twenty songs and two encores, Whibley expressed his gratitude to the fans for all they had to put up with to be at the show, acknowledging the stresses of making plans, buying tickets, and finding parking for a concert. It was obvious from the joy in the crowd that all those things were worth going through to be there.
If there’s one thing Sum 41 is, it’s authentic. The lyrics they write are raw and honest, and they bring their true selves to the stage and give it their all. Their influence in music and amongst their fans is obvious, with the punk-rock scene living on and thriving. Though the band may be over, their legacy - and their family - will live on.

Neon jackets and acid wash jeans were back in style Thursday night at the River Cree Resort and Casino as the 80s Club tour rolled into town. The lineup featured four of the more popular bands from the 80s proved that they can still dance the night away nearly four decades later.
The show was opened by The Spoons, who soon had everyone dancing and singing in the isles as they raced to their seats. Ivan Doroschuk showed Men Without Hats still draws a crowd with the non-stop energetic dancing and professionalism dealing with technical challenges, showing that he is still passionate about entertaining his fans. He decided to encore their mega hit Safety Dance as no one could hear it as the second set began. It felt as though they were only getting started and it was time to go.
Up next was A Flock of Seagulls and although lead singer/keyboard player Mike Score no longer sports the trademark hairstyle he had made famous, the band stayed true to their roots. They introduced some new music from their upcoming 2025 album as well as fan favourites such as Wishing and I Ran. I was surprised to see Canadian Gordon Deppe of Spoons is also a member of the British band A Flock of Seagulls.
Do you remember where you were the first time you heard New Girl Now? Standing in the audience between stage changes, I heard many people sharing their stories about their favourite songs they hoped the bands would play.  Johnnie D and Derry Grehan know how to get everyone into the songs, often straddling the barriers or standing on the speakers to get as close as possible to the fans. Gary Lalonde is often smiling as he brings the harmonies on bass and drummer Dave Betts keeps everything in line. Peter Nunn’s keyboarding gives their music their distinctive sound. Honeymoon Suite is a band that is incredible to hear live and the energy between the band members is contagious.  Judging by the way the fans screamed and sang along, I know it was a fantastic show

The recent Evanescence concert in Edmonton, Alberta, was more than just an electrifying night of music, it was a celebration of women at the forefront of rock and metal. With all three bands led by formidable female vocalists, the event delivered a dynamic and empowering experience.

Opening the night, The Warning showcased their impressive blend of youthful energy and modern rock. The three sisters captivated the audience with an intense performance that held their attention from start to finish. Known for merging hard rock with poignant lyrical themes, The Warning offered a set that was both musically tight and emotionally resonant.

Next up was Halestorm, fronted by the incomparable Lzzy Hale, whose fiery vocals and masterful guitar work were nothing short of electrifying. The band unleashed a whirlwind of energy, fusing hard rock riffs with a rebellious spirit. Lzzy’s commanding stage presence and remarkable vocal range drew the crowd in, creating a personal and raw connection. A highlight of the evening was when Lzzy and Amy Lee joined forces for a duet of “Break In.” Halestorm’s setlist was a powerful mix of hard-hitting anthems and introspective ballads, featuring fan favourites like “I Miss the Misery” and “Love Bites.”

Finally, Evanescence took the stage, with Amy Lee delivering a performance that was both hauntingly beautiful and fiercely powerful. Her enchanting voice filled the venue, seamlessly transitioning between piano-driven ballads and heavier, gothic-infused rock anthems. The band’s set, featuring beloved classics and newer tracks, highlighted their signature blend of symphonic metal and emotional depth. Amy's vocals soared above the instrumentation, reaffirming her status as one of the genre’s most iconic voices. Standout tracks included “Bring Me to Life,” “My Immortal,” and “Going Under.”

The evening served as a testament to the strength and talent of women in rock, with each band offering a unique yet complementary experience. Fans left the show feeling inspired by the extraordinary vocal power and stage presence of these three incredible female-fronted acts.
